As you may know, there is quite a bit to consider when commissioning a portrait, so, in order to help make the process as easy as possible, I have put together the below information for you to refer to..
Initial things to consider:
Who and what is to be in the portrait
How big you would like it to be
(Many portraits are designed for a particular space. If this is the case, please be aware that all sizes given in this document are canvas/board sizes, so please allow c. 8cm/ 4″ all round for a frame, if you choose to have one.)
When you would need the portrait finished by
(If you have a particular event in mind, such as an anniversary, birthday or retirement, it is important to realise that my portraits can take anything from 4 weeks to 4 months to complete, depending on the size and the level of detail.)
Your approximate budget
Once you have an idea of the sort of portrait you want, I will be able to visit you to do some initial sketches and take reference photos. However, if it is a surprise gift or posthumous portrait, I can work from a photo provided by you. (Similarly, if the subject of your portrait is to be of a young child/children, then, for practical reasons, I can work from a photo.)
It is important that the photo I use is of really good quality as this will enable me to see plenty of detail. If I feel your chosen photo isn’t quite right for the purposes of creating an accurate and detailed portrait, I may ask you to choose an alternative photo, or perhaps even a selection of photos, so that I have the best possible reference.
Once all the details of your commission are established, I will be able to give you a quote. (It is worth noting that the price I give you is for my fee only. Framing, delivery and any travel expenses are not included.) Upon placing your order you will be required to pay a 40% deposit, at which point I will make a start on your commission.
When your commission is nearing completion, I will email you a digital image of the portrait. If there are any minor amendments that you would like to discuss, I will be happy to do so at this point.
As soon as you have approved the finished portrait and once full payment has been received, I will organise delivery of your painting,
Whilst I retain full image rights on the portraits I produce, I am happy for you to use the image of your artwork for any non-commercial purpose. So, once you’ve paid for your portrait you are free to display it on social media or to make prints or copies of from it as you wish (including mugs, mousemats, or whatever you like!)
All my portraits are made using quality, professional standard oil paints. For smaller portraits, I tend to paint on artists’ board (such as Gessobord) and for larger pieces I use high quality stretched linen canvas. Both surfaces are easy to frame. I often get asked if the painting will be varnished – this isn’t possible because oil paintings of any sort need to dry completely before any varnish can be applied. The time needed depends on the thickness of the paint applied and the types of mediums used, however a 3 to 6 month period is usually what is required. I do recommend that you get your painting varnished once it is dry, as it provides a protective layer against dirt and dust. (If you are local to me, then I will be more than happy to varnish your portrait for you after 6 months or so of drying time.)
I have broken down the pricing by format and size of canvas/board. The below prices are a guide - if your portrait has a particularly detailed background, then the fee will be adjusted to reflect this - and I’ll let you know this before I start. If the portrait is to include hands (usually on larger portraits only), then an additional 20% will be added to the fee.
